Create free accountokay so when you load up Clash Royale this is the screen that you come to and in some ways it could look a little bit complex cuz there's quite a lot of things going on there but in terms of where your eyes is immediately drawn to there's one place where your ey is immedately drawn to really and and that is the free chest open so we can see there's kind of uh stuff about the my level in the game my trophies my currency that's kind of interesting for me to know but that's not immediately what I look at when I come into the game there's even something with a little red one on it don't you know what's that so it's not that there's no depth to the game it's not that there kind of these structures aren't there in the game but when you load up the game you basically want to play Clash Royale that's the that's the thing you get into it very quickly you might want to go straight into the battle but the first thing you see is this free open chest so this is a pretty
clever thing that supercell have thought about and kind of brought into the game so when you load the game you want to play the game obviously you're feeling good about the game the first thing you see when you when you go when you load up the game is a little reward so that makes you feel even better so this is something that um from a psychological point of view is called reciprocity reciprocity is very simple it's if someone does something nice for you you feel nice to them actually it's a bit more kind of interesting than that is if someone does something just a little bit nice to you you feel kind of overwhelmingly positive back to them and in this case supercell in Clash Royale is not particularly generous with the way it hands out currency and items and such like there are games that are much more generous I wouldn't say supercell is um mean in its giving away but it's not overly generous the success of Super Games is not coming because that it gives away a lot of in-game currency um but it's doing things in a much more
subtle manner so if I press if I go to the free chest okay let's open it so there's our chest wow I've got I've got some gold so gold is not particularly valuable but you know 30 gold is better than not having 30 gold tap on again i' still got here got my my knight well that's you know got some some cards for that and I've still got one more to open tap on again oh Goblin rare card I can level up my Goblin hut now wow okay actually none of those things for any kind of deep player of the game are that interesting or that useful um obviously better have them than not have them but very subtly what supercell is is making you feel is happy about the game happy you loaded it up oh and what's this there's still another free chest to open so these basically replenish every 4 hours and so you can kind of you know build them up um you kind of stack them up so in some weird but I think if you were playing this game for a long period of time you would kind of perhaps not be very
bothered about the free chests because they're not really progressing you very far in the game compared to the other chest the crown chest or the all the the kind of chest you win for winning battles so I think it would be interesting if if this changes over time and supercell um kind of either gives you better things in the free chest or kind of somehow downgrades the free chest cuz but for someone who's just started the game out for the first kind of weeks and perhaps even month is something you go to straight away and there's another kind of clever thing which I'm sure supercell have kind of tested um and I will show you how I used to open free chests oh got a free chest oh let's open it oh look at that tap tap tap tap tap tap tap oh oh stting a battle
Clash Royale utilizes psychological principles of reciprocity to drive player retention and engagement through its user interface design. By positioning a free reward chest as the primary visual focal point upon loading the game, the developer creates an immediate positive feedback loop. Although the rewards contained within these chests—typically small amounts of gold or common cards—are objectively low in value for experienced players, the act of receiving a gift fosters a disproportionately positive emotional response toward the game. This subtle mechanism encourages players to return frequently, as the chests replenish every four hours, establishing a consistent habit of interaction.
The design strategy prioritizes speed and accessibility, ensuring players feel rewarded the moment they enter the application. While the game features complex systems, currencies, and competitive structures, the interface directs user attention toward the reward system to mitigate the friction of navigating a dense menu. This approach effectively balances the need for depth with the necessity of immediate gratification, keeping players engaged even when the actual utility of the rewards is marginal.
A notable consequence of this design is the accidental initiation of gameplay sessions. Because the interface encourages rapid tapping to claim rewards, players often inadvertently trigger the battle matchmaking system. This unintended transition serves as a secondary engagement driver, pulling users directly into the core gameplay loop. While the value of these free rewards may diminish as players progress, the system remains a highly effective tool for onboarding new users and maintaining daily active usage through the strategic application of behavioral psychology.
