Industry revenue reached 144.3 billion yuan (US$20.0 billion) in H1 2023. This represents a 2.39% year-on-year decline.
The Chinese gaming industry experienced a slight revenue contraction in the first half of 2023, yet remains positioned for a strong recovery in the latter half of the year. Data from the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association indicates that industry revenue reached 144.3 billion yuan (US$20.0 billion) during this period, representing a 2.39 percent year-on-year decline. Despite this dip, the domestic gamer base reached a record high of 668 million, effectively encompassing half of the nation's population.
Market analysts observe clear signals of a rebound, highlighted by a 22 percent quarter-on-quarter revenue increase in the second quarter. Growth is particularly evident in the PC-based gaming sector, which saw a 7.2 percent revenue increase driven by eSports and cross-platform distribution. Industry stakeholders identify eSports as a primary catalyst for future development, with the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games serving as a significant milestone for the sector. Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence into training, content production, and virtual reality gaming experiences is expected to further optimize the industry's growth trajectory.
While domestic revenue shows signs of stabilization, Chinese gaming firms reported an 8.72 percent decline in overseas market revenue, totaling US$8.21 billion. Although traditional markets like the United States, Japan, and South Korea remain dominant, companies are increasingly targeting high-growth regions such as the Middle East, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. To bolster global competitiveness, firms are leveraging international partnerships, such as the Sony PlayStation China Hero Project, to facilitate global expansion and improve service environments for domestic developers.
