Tencent is among the potential buyers for these gaming assets.
ByteDance is currently exploring the divestment of its gaming division, Nuverse, as part of a broader corporate restructuring initiated in late 2023. The company is in negotiations with potential buyers, including Tencent, to offload various gaming assets. While discussions are ongoing, no formal agreements have been finalized, and the potential sale of these assets may occur at a significant discount.
The strategic shift follows a period of aggressive expansion for ByteDance, which invested approximately 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion) in gaming-related mergers and acquisitions between 2019 and 2022. Despite this capital expenditure, the gaming segment failed to gain significant traction, contributing less than 1% of the company’s $54 billion revenue during the first half of 2023. Consequently, ByteDance is prioritizing long-term strategic growth areas, leading to the potential sale of titles such as Crystal of Atlan and Earth: Revival, as well as the possible divestment of Moonton Technology, which was acquired for $4 billion in 2021.
The future of the popular title Marvel Snap remains distinct from the broader Nuverse restructuring. Although Nuverse serves as the publisher, the game will continue to be supported by its developer, Second Dinner, which recently secured $100 million in funding. This move underscores a broader industry trend where ByteDance is retreating from its role as a major gaming publisher to focus on its core business operations.
