Create free accounthi uh i'm andrew smith from spielberg studios uh i'm at the mine candy hq for another bob hack event you might remember from i don't know like six months ago something like that we did a summer sports hack we're a bunch of uh very talented developers this is about half of them got together from various companies and uh we had a theme this time it's winter sports and we're going to create a little game like a little bit like warioware like a bunch of mini games each one seven seconds long um we're going to put it out on ios and android uh just as soon as we're finished the event lasts for the whole weekend um some of us are saying for that some of us aren't and yeah it's great fun it's a nice way to kind of expand your creative abilities like i'm not an artist necessarily but i've been doing artwork for for the game that i'm working on with andrew ropa from indie skies spain and yeah it's a giggle you get to make a game in a short amount of time and and
ship it and that's really really satisfying it's not something you get to do very well usually it takes weeks or months so it's a nice changing place and that's pretty much it hi i'm alex rancherson i am a one-man game studio i make game striper and ipad including the greedy bankers games and i'm here at the bob hack i am programming a game at the moment where you're santa and you have to decide whether it's your child to be naughty or nice and give them a present or a lump of coal depending on whether they've been naughty or nice and um yeah i also did the framework for the jam and um so um everyone the whole thing is fitted together from my framework um that i've put together for the last jam and updated for this one um so eventually when it all comes together we'll be able to put it all into one big bundle of awesome that all links together and like you win one or lose one then it moves you on to the next one
so it'll be good looking forward to it hq for we are all developing games within 48 hours i'm working on three games it's all going really well at the moment and i am a former creative director of mobile phi who's a mobile developer and now a consultant of my own company which is cool it's got some lift limiters and i'm here at bob hack today as for well founder of bob so the initial concept for bob was my idea
so bob stands for british and we're doing this hack over this weekend which is the second one that we've done and the first one was based around the olympics although it wasn't the olympics officially because legally we can do the olympics um and the premise was that each company came in they put a team of two people and they made these seven second games and each of the seven games went sequentially against each other and aware of where style so you played one and went on to the next one they got concurrently faster and faster so we're doing exactly the same thing again today but it being the winter there's no winter games so we've switched it from summer to winter and it's going very well so far i flew in last night from from france and it was a little bit late so i've mostly been playing board games hi i'm andrew and i'm here at mike county as part of the ball pack uh i'm a programmer i'm currently working with spilt milk studios to develop his crazy crazy games no doubt he'll explain
again
The Best of British (BOB) game hack serves as a collaborative, high-intensity development event designed to foster creativity and rapid prototyping within the UK game industry. Held at the Mine Candy headquarters, the event challenges professional developers from various independent studios to conceive, build, and ship functional mobile games within a 48-hour window. By condensing the development cycle into a single weekend, participants bypass the typical months-long production timeline, allowing for experimentation and the immediate release of finished software on iOS and Android platforms.
The event centers on a specific design philosophy inspired by the WarioWare series, where developers create a collection of mini-games lasting only seven seconds each. These individual segments are integrated into a unified framework that transitions players sequentially between games, with the difficulty and speed increasing as the session progresses. The current iteration focuses on a winter sports theme, requiring participants to adapt their technical and artistic skills to meet the constraints of the short-form, fast-paced gameplay model.
This initiative highlights the collaborative nature of the British independent development scene, bringing together solo developers and studio representatives to share resources and technical frameworks. By utilizing a standardized, pre-built framework, the participants ensure that disparate mini-games can be bundled into a cohesive, playable product. The event functions as both a professional development exercise and a creative outlet, emphasizing the satisfaction of rapid iteration and the ability to produce polished, shippable content under strict time pressure. Through these recurring hacks, the community continues to refine its approach to mobile game design, focusing on accessibility, brevity, and collective technical problem-solving.
