Bandai Namco
The Bandai Namco Group’s first-half financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2021 demonstrate a resilient performance despite the significant operational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company reported net sales of 337.1 billion yen and an operating profit of 45.9 billion yen. While these figures represent a year-over-year decline, they significantly outperformed the company’s initial internal forecasts established in August 2020. The group opted to maintain its original full-year guidance, citing ongoing market volatility and the unpredictable nature of the pandemic’s impact on future consumer behavior.
Performance varied sharply across business segments. The Toys and Hobby division achieved record-high first-half results, bolstered by strong demand for mature fan-oriented products and the popularity of new intellectual properties such as Demon Slayer. Similarly, the Network Entertainment segment saw robust growth, driven by strong digital demand for home video games and the continued success of established mobile titles like Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle. Conversely, the Real Entertainment segment faced substantial losses due to the mandatory closure of amusement facilities and reduced foot traffic, while the Visual and Music Production segment struggled with a drastic reduction in live event capacity.
To mitigate these challenges, the group is aggressively pursuing digital transformation and organizational restructuring. Strategic initiatives include expanding e-commerce capabilities, shifting toward IP-centered management systems, and developing new, resilient business models for physical entertainment venues. Despite the headwinds in location-based entertainment, the company remains focused on long-term growth through the continued development of high-quality IP and the strategic expansion of its digital content portfolio.
