Zynga achieved record-breaking financial performance in the second quarter of 2021, reporting $720 million in revenue, a 59% increase year-over-year. Alongside these financial results, the company announced the $525 million acquisition of the Chinese mobile game developer StarLark, the studio behind the popular title Golf Rival. This strategic move aims to leverage China’s talent pool while expanding Zynga’s portfolio, with expectations that Golf Rival will eventually generate over $100 million in annual revenue. Additionally, the company finalized its $250 million acquisition of the mobile advertising and monetization platform Chartboost to strengthen its competitive advantage in the mobile ecosystem.
The financial data for the second quarter of 2021 highlights significant growth across several key metrics. Mobile titles accounted for 97% of total revenue, driven by core franchises such as Toon Blast, Toy Blast, CSR Racing, Empires & Puzzles, and Merge Dragons. While bookings reached $712 million—a 37% year-over-year increase—the company also saw a substantial turnaround in profitability, reporting a net income of $28 million compared to a $150 million loss in the same period of 2020. User engagement metrics also surged, with daily active users reaching 41 million and monthly active users climbing to 205 million.
Geographically, the United States remains the primary market, contributing $436 million in player spending, which represents nearly two-thirds of the company's total revenue. These findings reflect a broader industry trend of aggressive consolidation and a focus on scaling mobile advertising capabilities to sustain long-term growth. The acquisition of StarLark is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021, with the payment structured as $315 million in cash and $210 million in common stock.
