Microsoft’s fiscal second quarter of 2025 highlights a divergent performance within its gaming division, characterized by robust growth in digital services and software content contrasted against a significant downturn in hardware sales. Total gaming revenue for the period reached $6.58 billion, representing a 7% year-over-year decline. This contraction was primarily driven by a 29% drop in hardware revenue, signaling ongoing challenges in the console market.
Despite the hardware slump, the company achieved record-breaking results in its subscription and content segments. Xbox Game Pass reached a new revenue peak, bolstered by a 30% increase in PC subscribers. Furthermore, content and services revenue grew by 2% year-over-year, supported by strong engagement with Activision Blizzard titles. Notably, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 emerged as the best-selling game on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms during the quarter, recording the highest player count for a paid release in the franchise's history. Additionally, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle surpassed 4 million players, while Xbox Cloud Gaming reached a milestone of 140 million hours streamed.
Looking ahead, management anticipates continued volatility in the gaming sector. Projections for the third quarter suggest low single-digit revenue growth, as the company expects hardware sales to remain depressed while first-party content and Game Pass services continue to provide modest, low-to-mid single-digit gains. These results underscore a strategic shift toward prioritizing digital ecosystem expansion and multi-platform content delivery to mitigate the impact of declining console hardware demand.
