The Esports Advocate
Esports Illustrated, a digital publication launched in March 2023, ceased operations in October 2025 following a decision by the board of its publisher, GaudHammer Gaming Group. Despite achieving profitability and reaching millions of monthly readers, the brand struggled to maintain long-term growth due to evolving search engine optimization requirements. These shifting external policies made the publication’s business model increasingly difficult to sustain, ultimately leading the board to conclude that continuing operations was no longer viable.
The closure was further complicated by a strategic disagreement regarding editorial direction. Minute Media, the current rights holder for the Sports Illustrated brand, requested that the publication narrow its focus to cover only "sports games." GaudHammer Gaming Group rejected this pivot, as it diverged from the publication's original mission and the board lacked confidence in the potential profitability of such a restricted scope. Consequently, the publisher opted to wind down the brand to focus on its core business of developing content for the regulated video games and iGaming sectors.
Throughout its tenure, Esports Illustrated provided comprehensive coverage of the esports industry, including collegiate esports partnerships and professional match scheduling. The brand earned industry recognition, including a Tempest Award for Digital Publication of the Year. While the "Esports on SI" section remains visible on the Sports Illustrated domain, the publication’s dedicated social media presence has been shuttered, marking the end of a two-year effort to provide specialized esports journalism to Gen-Z and Millennial audiences.
