How To Market A Game
This metric offers a transparent view of player engagement that marketing assets cannot manipulate. Higher engagement strongly correlates with higher revenue tiers.
Median play time serves as a critical, objective performance metric for game demos, offering a transparent view of player engagement that cannot be manipulated by marketing assets. By analyzing data from 130 games across three separate surveys—including Steam Next Fest events in February and October 2022—the research establishes clear benchmarks for success. The findings indicate a strong correlation between higher median play times and commercial success, with top-performing "Diamond" tier games achieving a median play time of 65 minutes, compared to just 7 minutes for "Bronze" tier titles.
Across the entire sample, the average median play time was 14 minutes, with a 70th percentile threshold of 22 minutes. While replayable, sandbox, or rogue-like games generally command higher engagement than linear, story-driven titles, the data suggests that the primary challenge is not genre-based but rather the inability of most players to reach the end of a demo, regardless of its intended length. Even when developers design demos for 30-minute sessions, the average player rarely completes the full experience.
To improve these metrics, developers are encouraged to utilize Steamworks data and embedded analytics to identify specific drop-off points. Common barriers to engagement include overly complex tutorials, excessive difficulty, or technical bugs. By conducting live playtests and implementing iterative balance changes—such as adjusting default difficulty settings—developers can significantly increase player retention. Ultimately, the research emphasizes that monitoring and refining the demo experience based on actual user behavior is essential for driving long-term interest and potential sales.
