The Esports Advocate
The current system prioritizes specific teams for tournament invitations based on business relationships and long-term partnerships. This has historically occurred regardless of current performance.
Valve is implementing significant structural changes to the professional Counter-Strike esports ecosystem to foster a more open and meritocratic competitive environment. The primary objective is to dismantle the existing system of gated access, where business relationships and long-term partnerships—such as the Louvre Agreement—have historically prioritized specific teams for tournament invitations regardless of their current performance. By mandating these reforms, Valve aims to ensure that the highest levels of competition remain accessible to teams based on objective skill and global rankings.
The new requirements for large-scale tournament organizers include the elimination of conflicts of interest between organizers and participating teams, the implementation of invitation models based strictly on Valve’s regional ranking system or open qualifiers, and the public disclosure of all team compensation and prize pool criteria. These mandates are designed to replace closed-circuit ecosystems with a transparent, performance-driven structure.
While these changes represent a major shift for the global Counter-Strike scene, the transition will be gradual to accommodate existing contractual obligations held by tournament organizers. Valve expects full compliance and the complete implementation of these new standards by the start of the 2025 season. To support this transition, the company has introduced a regional ranking model and is actively soliciting community feedback to refine the framework, signaling a long-term commitment to the health and sustainability of the sport.
