The Road to gamescom 2020 initiative, managed by Gamecity Hamburg in collaboration with the Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft, was designed to support local game developers and companies in accessing the European games market. The program’s primary objective was to facilitate professional exposure and networking opportunities for Hamburg-based studios at gamescom, the leading trade exhibition for games culture in Europe. Following the transition of the 2020 event to a digital-only format, the initiative adapted its strategy to ensure participants could still engage with international publishers, journalists, and trade visitors through virtual platforms.
The program provided two distinct pathways for participation: the Gamecity Hamburg joint area and the Creative Ports Game Mixer. The Gamecity Hamburg program offered up to six selected developers free exhibition space at the Indie Arena Booth, while the Creative Ports initiative supported up to five developers through a specialized program focused on professional exchange and international networking. Eligibility required applicants to be commercially oriented, maintain a headquarters or branch in Hamburg, and possess a playable version of their game. Selection for both programs was determined by a jury composed of representatives from the organizing bodies and the Indie Arena Booth.
By partnering with the award-winning Indie Arena Booth, the initiative aimed to provide high-visibility opportunities in the consumer area of the trade fair. The support package included booth space, access to business lounges, and participation in workshops covering essential industry skills such as pitching and press relations. This effort underscores a broader commitment to fostering the growth of the Hamburg games industry by providing the resources necessary for local talent to compete on a global stage.
