UK Games Fund
These studios received financial packages to aid in the development of their own intellectual property.
The UK Games Fund successfully concluded its sixth round of funding in May 2020, demonstrating the resilience of the British independent games sector during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the logistical challenges posed by national lockdowns, the organization maintained its commitment to supporting domestic developers by transitioning to a remote interview process and adapting its financial support structure to better serve small businesses facing economic uncertainty.
The selection process was highly competitive, drawing over 170 applications from across the United Kingdom. Ultimately, 38 independent studios were selected to receive financial support for the development of their intellectual property. While the initial program design intended to award a smaller prize followed by a secondary pitching event, the fund pivoted to provide immediate, flexible financial packages to maximize the number of studios supported. Beyond direct capital, these companies gained access to the broader UK Games Fund community, which includes networking opportunities, exclusive learning resources, and industry events.
Recipients of this funding round represent a diverse cross-section of the UK indie scene, including studios such as Ant Workshop, Brain and Nerd, and Silver Rain Games. The primary objective of this intervention was to provide stability for these small businesses, allowing them to maintain core teams and accelerate production timelines for vertical slices and demos. By providing this support, the fund aimed to ensure that promising projects could continue to progress toward investor readiness despite the broader economic instability affecting the creative industries at the time.
