The Swedish esports tournament platform terminated its entire staff of approximately 50 employees. This followed a failure to secure additional funding or an acquisition partner.
The Stockholm-based esports tournament platform Stryda, formerly known as G-Loot, filed for bankruptcy in December 2023, resulting in the termination of its entire staff. Despite raising nearly $100 million in total investment since 2016 and reaching a peak valuation of approximately $178 million in 2020, the company struggled to achieve profitability. The collapse followed a series of failed attempts to secure additional funding or an acquisition partner, with leadership reporting that over 100 potential investors ultimately declined to support the business.
The company’s financial decline was marked by unsustainable growth strategies and high operational costs. While revenues reached $6 million in 2020, they plummeted to roughly $0.5 million by 2022, accompanied by persistent net losses that totaled over $25 million in 2020 and continued to accumulate through 2023. Efforts to pivot toward profitability included significant workforce reductions, office downsizing, and the phasing out of high-cost products, yet these measures proved insufficient to maintain necessary working capital.
The closure highlights the volatility of the esports sector, where high customer acquisition costs and heavy spending on staffing and event production often outpace revenue generation. At its height, the company employed over 120 people, a figure that dwindled to approximately 50 by the time of the bankruptcy filing. While the parent entity, G-Loot Global Esports AB, remains a holding company with no active operations, the insolvency has left outstanding financial obligations, including unpaid prize money from a recent tournament.
