The Pokémon EIC Shocks with 1.2M Hours Watched

The 2024 Pokémon Europe International Championships (EUIC) served as a significant barometer for the health of the Pokémon esports ecosystem, demonstrating substantial growth in audience engagement. Held in April 2024, the event generated 1.2 million hours watched, representing a 185% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. This surge contributed to a broader 148% rise in viewership for major Pokémon titles across the same weekend, highlighting the event's ability to drive interest in the franchise's competitive scene.

The Video Game Championships (VGC) remained the most popular segment, accounting for 575,000 hours watched, or 46.8% of the total event viewership. A critical driver of this engagement was co-streaming, which accounted for 70.5% of VGC viewership, underscoring the importance of personality-driven content in the competitive space. Twitch emerged as the primary platform for VGC coverage, capturing 84.8% of its audience, whereas more casual titles like Pokémon GO and the Trading Card Game saw higher engagement on YouTube.

Geographically, Europe remains the dominant region for Pokémon esports, commanding 47.2% of total international championship viewership. While the event saw record-breaking interest—most notably a 2,069% increase in Pokémon GO viewership—the competitive landscape faces structural changes, such as the removal of the Oceania International Championships from the 2024 circuit. Overall, the data indicates that the Pokémon esports scene is successfully expanding its reach by balancing traditional competitive play with casual-friendly content, bolstered by a strong reliance on influencer-led co-streaming to maintain momentum.
