Quantic Foundry
Mechanical Turk was used to cross-reference entries with Wikipedia for accuracy.
The development of a personalized game recommendation engine serves to bridge the gap between gamer motivation profiles and actionable game discovery. By leveraging data from over 140,000 participants in the Gamer Motivation Profile, the system identifies gamers with similar psychological drivers and suggests titles that resonate with those specific preferences. The primary objective is to provide tailored recommendations that move beyond generic popularity, ensuring that niche interests are surfaced alongside mainstream titles.
To address the challenge of popularity bias, where blockbuster titles dominate results, the system utilizes a proprietary metric known as the Quantic Foundry (QF) score. This score adjusts a game’s local popularity within a specific user segment against its baseline popularity across the entire dataset, effectively highlighting games that are disproportionately favored by specific personality types.
The implementation process involved two significant technical hurdles: data standardization and computational efficiency. To clean over 22,000 unique, user-generated text entries, the team utilized a crowdsourced approach via Mechanical Turk, where entries were cross-referenced with Wikipedia to establish a canonical list of titles. Computationally, the engine employs a "ball tree" data structure to pre-compute nearest-neighbor searches, enabling the system to generate real-time recommendations from a large, complex dataset.
Beyond individual recommendations, the engine facilitates a "Game Together" feature, which identifies overlapping interests between two users. This functionality provides a comparative analysis of gaming preferences, effectively mapping the intersection of two distinct motivation profiles. The engine represents a synthesis of social science and data engineering, designed to evolve as the underlying motivation framework and user data continue to expand.
