The workshop covers DNA transcription into mRNA and translation into proteins using physical game pieces. Participants take on a cell-themed mission.
"The Language of Life" is a paper describing a one-hour, game-based workshop designed to teach protein biosynthesis, specifically transcription of DNA into mRNA and translation of mRNA into proteins via the genetic code. The workshop uses laser-cut EVA foam pieces shaped as interlocking DNA strands, mRNA codons, and tRNA triplets carrying amino acids. Participants take on a "mission" inside a cell, moving through designated nucleus and translation zones and assembling sequences that open combination locks. The activity was presented at the Genoa Science Festival 2022, an Italian science communication event drawing roughly 200,000 visitors, and was attended by 1,505 participants, mostly students aged 6 to 18, across about 70 sessions.
The authors report that a short anonymous self-evaluation survey was completed by 1,045 attendees, with a sample that was 52.6% female and 43.0% male, and a mean age of 16.8. Participants rated interest growth, learning, and appreciation on a four-point scale. Overall means were 3.00 for interest, 3.36 for learning, and 3.57 for appreciation, with younger children (ages 5 to 10) and adults over 20 scoring slightly higher than adolescents aged 14 to 20. The authors acknowledge that the fast-paced festival setting precluded pre-testing, baseline analysis, or long-term follow-up, so the data reflect self-reported perceptions rather than measured learning gains.
The paper frames the workshop within broader literature on game-based learning in STEM, noting mixed evidence on when such approaches are effective and emphasizing physical, hands-on games as a complement to digital tools. The authors conclude that the results are promising but call for controlled, experimental studies to confirm the workshop's educational efficacy.
