The analysis examines the scope and demographic impact of these job losses.
This analysis examines the impact of game industry layoffs in 2023, a year that saw over 7,000 job losses, on studio roles, departments, and individual demographics. The study aims to understand how companies are prioritizing budgets and identify potential discriminatory trends. The research involved a survey of 235 game industry professionals affected by layoffs, recruited through social media and professional groups.
Key findings indicate that layoffs impacted studios of all sizes, with those employing 101-500 individuals being most affected, followed by studios with over 500 employees. Design-related roles experienced the highest impact at 18%, followed by production (15%), art (14%), marketing (10%), and programming (9%).
Demographically, men constituted 56% of those laid off, while women accounted for 37%, a disproportionately high percentage given their 30% representation in the industry, consistent with trends observed in the broader tech sector. The majority of respondents were White (76%), followed by Asian (14%), Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (8%), and Black or African American (7%). The largest age group affected was 31-41 (41%), followed by 18-30 (36%), aligning with general industry age demographics. While most demographic groups were impacted proportionally to their industry representation, women faced a notably higher impact. The report concludes that layoffs are significantly affecting studios and professionals across all departments and backgrounds, highlighting a challenging period for the industry. It also emphasizes the need for more comprehensive demographic data to accurately identify and address potentially discriminatory trends in layoff practices.
