The average cost per install (CPI) for casual games has increased to $2.17.
The casual gaming sector faces significant headwinds as it navigates a post-pandemic landscape defined by heightened user privacy regulations and rising acquisition costs. This analysis, which synthesizes data from the 2024 Casual Gaming Apps Report and machine-learning-powered insights, aims to provide mobile marketers with actionable strategies for user acquisition, monetization, and engagement. The findings cover global market trends observed between March 2023 and March 2024, focusing on performance metrics across iOS and Android platforms.
A primary finding is the stark disparity in acquisition costs between operating systems. The average cost per install (CPI) for casual games has doubled to $2.17, driven largely by iOS, where costs reached $4.83—a $2.50 increase over the previous year. Conversely, Android remains significantly more economical at $0.65 per install. While iOS presents higher costs, it maintains a slightly stronger Day 7 return on ad spend (ROAS) at 5.9%. Geographically, Latin America offers the lowest CPI at $0.44, though North America remains the leader in ROAS at 6%.
The analysis also highlights shifting genre dynamics and monetization tactics. Simulation games currently offer the most cost-effective acquisition at $1.77 per install, while puzzle games remain the largest market segment. To combat rising costs and privacy constraints, developers are increasingly adopting sophisticated LiveOps strategies, such as minigames and social win-streak events, alongside innovative monetization formats like progressive and engagement-based offers. Furthermore, the industry is seeing a notable shift toward external web stores, allowing developers to bypass platform-specific fees and capture higher margins. These trends underscore the necessity for marketers to adopt platform-specific, data-driven campaigns to maintain profitability in an increasingly competitive environment.
