UK Games Fund
The UK Games Fund, a government-backed initiative, officially launched its inaugural round of funding in February 2016 to bolster the domestic video game industry. The primary objective of this program is to provide financial support to early-stage game development companies, enabling them to scale their operations and produce commercially viable, high-quality titles. By injecting capital into the sector, the initiative aims to solidify the United Kingdom’s position as a global leader in interactive entertainment and foster the creation of future industry blockbusters.
The first round of the program successfully identified 24 independent game development studios across the United Kingdom to receive financial backing. The selected cohort includes a diverse range of developers such as Atomicom, Coatsink Software, Futurlab, Roll7, and Tag Games, among others. These recipients represent a cross-section of the UK’s creative talent, tasked with utilizing these resources to advance their development pipelines and strengthen their business models.
This funding round serves as a foundational step in a broader strategy to support the UK games ecosystem through various financial vehicles, including the Prototype, Starter, and Content funds. By focusing on the growth of independent studios, the initiative seeks to mitigate the financial risks associated with early-stage development and provide a sustainable pathway for creative innovation. The announcement underscores a commitment from the UK government to prioritize the digital economy and provide the necessary infrastructure for domestic developers to compete effectively on the international stage.
