Square Enix
The company reported a 260% year-over-year increase in operating profit.
Square Enix’s financial results for the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, ending June 30, 2024, reveal a significant divergence between top-line revenue and operational profitability. While consolidated revenue fell 18.4% year-over-year to ¥69.9 billion ($482 million), operating profit surged by 260% to ¥10.8 billion ($74.5 million). This profit growth was primarily driven by reduced development cost amortization and lower advertising expenditures, which offset the impact of declining sales.
The Digital Entertainment division, which accounts for 63% of total revenue, experienced a 29.5% year-over-year decline in revenue to ¥43.9 billion ($302.8 million). Total game unit sales dropped to 4.39 million copies, down from 7.54 million in the same period last year, with digital sales representing 87% of that volume. Geographically, North America and Europe remained the primary markets, contributing 67.5% of total game sales, while Japan accounted for 19.3%.
Performance across specific gaming segments was mixed. The HD Games (PC and console) segment saw a sharp 57.4% revenue decline to ¥12.3 billion ($84.8 million), attributed to a lack of major new releases compared to the previous year’s launch of Final Fantasy XVI. Conversely, the MMO segment grew 13.6% to ¥12.5 billion ($86.2 million), bolstered by the successful release of the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion. Meanwhile, the mobile and browser games segment remained the highest revenue contributor at ¥18.9 billion ($130 million), despite weak performance from existing titles, as the company successfully optimized operational expenses.
