The Game Post
The game did not meet user engagement and sales benchmarks set during the 2022 acquisition.
Sony has recorded an impairment loss of approximately $204 million, or ¥31.5 billion, regarding its Bungie assets. This financial adjustment stems from the underperformance of the live-service title Destiny 2, which has failed to meet the aggressive user engagement and sales benchmarks established during the studio’s 2022 acquisition. As a result of these missed targets, near-term business projections for the developer have been downwardly revised to reflect current market realities.
Despite these fiscal challenges, the broader PlayStation segment remains stable, and the company does not anticipate that these specific asset impairments will negatively impact its overall gaming division. The long-term value of the acquisition continues to be supported by the wider portfolio, though management acknowledges that future asset valuations remain contingent upon the studio’s ability to stabilize its existing titles and successfully execute its upcoming development pipeline.
Central to the studio’s recovery strategy is the highly anticipated shooter Marathon, which is currently scheduled for a multi-platform release on March 5, 2026. The title is slated to launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. While the project has faced internal development hurdles, the developer is actively working to resolve these issues to ensure the game meets its revised launch window. This release represents a critical juncture for the studio as it seeks to diversify its offerings and restore investor confidence following the recent impairment.
