The game of Hex presents a significant computational challenge due to its PSPACE-complete nature, which necessitates advanced strategies to navigate its vast state space. By integrating recursive-descent game-tree searches with virtual connection composition rules and move-domination state reduction, it is possible to resolve arbitrary game states on a 7x7 board. This methodology effectively prunes the search tree, allowing for the successful generation of complete proof-trees for all 49 possible opening moves on this board size.
The core of this analytical approach relies on the SOLVER algorithm, which utilizes a combination of static and dynamic virtual connection computations alongside side-triangle fill-in techniques. These reductions significantly enhance search efficiency, outperforming models that rely solely on virtual connections. The practical application of these techniques required approximately 615 hours of computation to fully map the 7x7 board, establishing a definitive baseline for optimal play in these specific configurations.
While these findings provide a comprehensive solution for 7x7 Hex, the complexity of the game increases exponentially with board size. Scaling these methods to an 8x8 board remains a formidable obstacle, as the current computational requirements exceed standard efficiency thresholds. Future research efforts are directed toward utilizing the 7x7 data to refine move-ordering heuristics, which may eventually facilitate the analysis of larger board dimensions. This work serves as a critical step in understanding the strategic depth of Hex and demonstrates the efficacy of state-reduction techniques in solving complex, finite-information games.
