Sega Sammy Holdings
Sega Sammy Holdings’ fiscal year 2010 interim results reflect a period of strategic restructuring and operational consolidation. The company reported consolidated net sales of 154.3 billion yen, a 23.0% year-on-year decline, while narrowing its operating loss to 300 million yen from 7.5 billion yen in the previous year. This performance was driven by a return to profitability in the pachislot and pachinko segment, which offset losses in the amusement machine and consumer business segments. Despite missing initial sales forecasts, the company achieved higher-than-expected profits through rigorous cost-management initiatives and improved gross margins.
The pachislot and pachinko segment served as the primary financial anchor, generating 68.3 billion yen in sales and 10.8 billion yen in operating income. Success in this area was attributed to strong unit sales of mainstay titles and an increased ratio of high-margin board sales. Conversely, the amusement machine and consumer segments faced challenges due to the timing of title releases and a lack of major software launches during the first half. To mitigate these pressures, the company reduced capital expenditures, lowered advertising costs, and closed 46 underperforming amusement facilities, bringing the total count to 277.
Looking ahead, the company maintains its full-year forecasts, projecting net sales of 420.0 billion yen and operating income of 27.0 billion yen. Strategic priorities for the second half include the release of key software titles, continued cost optimization in R&D, and the expansion of new business ventures. Notably, the company has established a dedicated CG animation subsidiary to leverage internal technical expertise for global IP development and formed a joint venture to manage the domestic expansion of the Bakugan franchise, signaling a long-term commitment to diversifying its character-based business portfolio.
