Between 2023 and 2025, 22% of UK game developers faced unemployment. This was due to mass layoffs, studio closures, or contract expirations.
The Scottish games industry has faced significant uncertainty regarding its size and composition, prompting efforts to better map the sector’s true scale. While 2016 data suggested a robust cluster of approximately 115 studios, subsequent internal directories from 2020 indicated a potential contraction to roughly 40 active entities. This discrepancy highlights a critical need for comprehensive research to move beyond the visibility of major players like Rockstar North and 4J Studios, ensuring that support organizations can accurately identify and assist the broader, more diverse ecosystem of developers and freelancers.
On a national level, the broader UK games industry has experienced a period of instability characterized by widespread workforce reductions. Recent data from the UK Interactive Entertainment Association (UKIE), derived from a survey of 1,610 developers, reveals that 22% of the workforce experienced unemployment between 2023 and 2025 due to layoffs, studio closures, or contract expirations. The impact has been unevenly distributed across roles, with screenwriters (44%), artists (31%), and game designers (30%) suffering the highest rates of job loss.
These findings are corroborated by broader industry trends, including data from TIGA indicating that the number of game development specialists in the UK declined by 4.5% between May 2024 and September 2025, marking a historic low for the sector. Despite these challenges, professional sentiment remains complex; while only 38% of surveyed developers would recommend a career in the UK games industry, 81% maintain a sense of pride in their professional identity. These combined insights underscore a period of significant structural adjustment for the UK and Scottish gaming landscapes.
