The January 2024 School Internship Games program in Hamburg, Germany, served as an educational initiative designed to introduce 16 ninth-grade students to the professional landscape of the games industry. By providing direct exposure to local game studios and academic institutions, the program aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world career paths, fostering interest in future employment within the sector.
The three-week curriculum offered participants a comprehensive overview of industry roles, including game design, audio design, production, quality assurance, product management, and data mining. Students engaged directly with professionals at Hamburg-based studios Fishlabs and InnoGames, while also receiving insights into game illustration and academic pathways at HAW Hamburg. The program concluded with a two-day game jam supported by the indie studio Tiny Roar, which allowed the participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge by developing their own projects.
Facilitated by media educators from the Initiative Creative Gaming, the program emphasized practical skill development and the creation of initial professional portfolios. The initiative successfully demonstrated the students' enthusiasm and commitment to the field, highlighting the effectiveness of immersive, industry-led outreach in cultivating the next generation of game developers. Given the positive reception and engagement observed during the final presentations, the program is scheduled to continue with subsequent iterations in the summer of 2024.
