Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the six-month period ending September 30, 2020, characterized by a significant increase in net sales and operating income despite the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Net sales reached 172.7 billion yen, up from 120.7 billion yen in the same period of the previous year, while operating income rose to 31.6 billion yen from 15.9 billion yen. This performance resulted in an improved operating income margin of 18.3%, a 5.1 percentage point increase year-over-year.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary driver of this growth, benefiting from the successful launches of major titles such as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers, alongside robust digital sales of catalog titles and strong performance in the smart device and PC browser gaming sectors. While the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) sub-segment saw a slight decline in net sales due to the timing of previous expansion packs, it maintained profitability through a growing base of monthly paying subscribers. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced significant headwinds, reporting an operating loss as pandemic-related facility closures through mid-June severely impacted same-store sales.
The company’s publication and merchandising segments provided additional stability, with the former seeing growth in digital manga and e-book sales, and the latter benefiting from merchandise tied to key intellectual properties. Following a period of uncertainty that prevented the issuance of formal guidance, the company established full-year forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, projecting net sales of 290 billion yen and operating income of 40 billion yen. These projections account for the ongoing recovery of the amusement business and the continued strategic focus on digital content distribution to offset potential development delays.
