Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. reported its financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2019, reflecting a period of growth driven by strong performance in its digital entertainment and publication segments. The company achieved net sales of 120.7 billion yen, an increase of 9.1 billion yen compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Operating income rose significantly to 15.9 billion yen, up from 9.7 billion yen, resulting in an improved operating income margin of 13.2 percent.
The Digital Entertainment segment remained the primary revenue driver, contributing 85.4 billion yen in net sales. Within this segment, the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) sub-segment saw growth due to the release of new expansion packs for Final Fantasy XIV and an increase in paying subscribers. Similarly, the smart device and PC browser game category benefited from the successful launch of Dragon Quest Walk and the continued popularity of Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe. Conversely, the high-definition (HD) games sub-segment experienced a decline in net sales due to the absence of major title launches during the period.
Other business segments also showed positive momentum. The Amusement segment reported higher net sales and operating income despite a lack of new hardware launches, supported by steady arcade operations. The Publication segment saw growth in both digital and print media, bolstered by the performance of the Manga Up! application. Additionally, the Merchandising segment increased its revenue through the release of new products featuring established intellectual properties. The company maintains a focus on leveraging its existing portfolio to drive international success and adapt to evolving consumer preferences in a competitive global market.
