Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the six-month period ending September 30, 2017, characterized by significant increases in both net sales and operating income compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Consolidated net sales reached 132.0 billion yen, representing a 25.7 billion yen increase, while operating income rose to 25.8 billion yen, a substantial improvement of 14.7 billion yen. This performance resulted in an operating income margin of 19.6%, up from 10.5% in the prior year.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary driver of this growth, contributing 102.1 billion yen in net sales and 26.5 billion yen in operating income. This success was fueled by the release of blockbuster HD titles and the robust performance of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, particularly the latest expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. Additionally, the smart device and PC browser game sector maintained stable revenue through existing titles and royalty income. The company also noted a strategic shift toward digital sales, with e-commerce enhancements and a rising digital sales ratio in its publication segment, which exceeded 20% during this period.
Secondary business segments, including Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising, provided steady contributions to the group's overall financial health. The Amusement division remained consistent, while the Publication segment benefited from media-mix strategies and increasing digital comic book sales. Merchandising performance was bolstered by character goods tied to established intellectual properties, including the 30th-anniversary celebrations of the Final Fantasy franchise. Based on these results, the company maintained a positive outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year, supported by a dividend policy targeting a 30% consolidated payout ratio.
