Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2016, highlighting a period of significant top-line growth alongside a contraction in operating profitability. The company achieved consolidated net sales of 106.3 billion yen, representing a 20% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. However, operating income declined by 1.5 billion yen to 11.1 billion yen, and net income fell to 5.5 billion yen. This divergence between revenue and profit was primarily driven by increased amortization costs associated with the launch of new AAA titles, underperformance in specific smart device and PC browser games, and upfront advertising expenditures.
The Digital Entertainment segment remained the primary revenue driver, contributing 78.3 billion yen in sales. While the segment saw strong growth, its operating margin compressed from 21.5% to 15.5% year-over-year. The Amusement segment reported 21.3 billion yen in sales, supported by the expansion of e-money payment systems and new facility openings, while the Publication segment experienced a decline due to a temporary shortage of media-mix titles. The company also updated its disclosure standards for game unit sales to include digital downloads, reporting a total of 12.94 million units sold for the period, with North America and Europe accounting for the majority of this volume.
Looking ahead, the company maintains a focus on its content production pipeline, noting an increase in the content production account balance as it prepares for major releases in the second half of the fiscal year, including high-profile titles such as Final Fantasy XV. The company’s strategy emphasizes leveraging its intellectual property through media-mix deployments and continued investment in mobile and browser-based gaming. Management maintains a full-year consolidated net sales projection of 250 to 270 billion yen, supported by a dividend policy targeting a 30% consolidated payout ratio.
