Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. reported strong financial growth for the six-month period ending September 30, 2014, driven by a robust performance in its Digital Entertainment segment. Consolidated net sales reached 73.1 billion yen, representing an increase of 11.5 billion yen compared to the same period in the previous year. Operating income saw significant growth, rising to 8.5 billion yen from 4.7 billion yen, while net income climbed to 5.7 billion yen. These results prompted an upward revision of the company’s full-year earnings forecast, with projected net sales now ranging between 150 and 160 billion yen and operating income between 11 and 16 billion yen.
The Digital Entertainment segment remains the primary revenue driver, contributing 43.8 billion yen in net sales. This segment is supported by a diversified portfolio that includes high-definition (HD) console games, massively multiplayer online (MMO) titles, and an expanding library of smart device and browser-based games. Notably, digital downloads now account for approximately one-third of HD game sales, reflecting a shift in consumer behavior. The company is actively pursuing international growth, particularly in Asia, through strategic alliances and the introduction of major titles like Final Fantasy XIV in China and Korea.
To mitigate development risks and improve asset turnover, the company has refined its production pipeline strategy. This involves balancing a mix of small, mid-size, and major blockbuster titles across both domestic and overseas studios. Furthermore, the company is investing in emerging technologies, including cloud gaming services and streaming platforms, to broaden its reach. With a content production account balance of 29.9 billion yen, the company maintains a substantial pipeline of high-potential titles scheduled for release in the upcoming fiscal periods.
