Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. reported a return to profitability for the six-month period ending September 30, 2013, following a loss in the same period of the previous year. The company achieved net sales of 61.7 billion yen, a 1% increase year-over-year, and generated an operating income of 4.7 billion yen, compared to an operating loss of 5.2 billion yen in the prior year. Net income for the period reached 2.6 billion yen. These results reflect a successful stabilization of the company’s core business segments, particularly within Digital Entertainment, which saw a significant turnaround in operating income from a 2.1 billion yen loss to a 3.5 billion yen profit.
The primary driver of this performance was the successful launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which recorded approximately 1.45 million units in combined disc and digital sales by the end of September 2013. The title’s subscription base exceeded 600,000 users, surpassing the historical peak of its predecessor. Beyond this flagship title, the company maintained its full-year earnings forecast, projecting net sales between 140 billion and 150 billion yen and operating income between 5 billion and 9 billion yen.
Strategic initiatives focus on transitioning from fixed-price models to variable earnings models, including the development of free-to-play titles like Nosgoth. The company is also aggressively expanding its presence in the mobile sector by porting popular franchises such as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy to smart devices. Furthermore, Square Enix is prioritizing international growth, specifically in Asia, through licensing partnerships in mainland China and the establishment of a new business base in Indonesia. These efforts underscore a broader corporate shift toward online-based titles and digital distribution across global markets.
