Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2020, characterized by significant increases in net sales and operating income compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Net sales reached 253.6 billion yen, an increase of 63.9 billion yen, while operating income rose to 41.0 billion yen, up 13.3 billion yen. This performance was largely driven by the robust performance of the Digital Entertainment segment, which benefited from major title releases and sustained growth in mobile and browser-based gaming.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary growth engine, with HD games seeing a turnaround to profitability following the successful launches of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers. The smart device and PC browser gaming sector also contributed significantly to the positive results, bolstered by titles such as Dragon Quest Walk and Dragon Quest Tact. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced substantial headwinds due to COVID-19-related facility closures, resulting in a sharp decline in same-store sales and an operating loss for the period.
The company’s Publication segment experienced a strong performance, with rising digital sales through the Manga Up! platform and increased demand for printed media. Merchandising also saw year-over-year growth, supported by the release of products featuring key intellectual properties. Geographically, the company saw a rise in total units sold across its gaming portfolio, reaching 15.8 million units for the nine-month period. These results reflect a diversified business strategy that successfully leveraged digital transformation and strong IP management to offset pandemic-related disruptions in physical amusement operations.
