Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. reported its financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2019, demonstrating significant growth in profitability compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The company achieved net sales of 189.7 billion yen, an increase of 8.1 billion yen year-over-year, while operating income rose substantially to 27.7 billion yen, up from 12.3 billion yen in the prior year. This performance reflects a robust expansion in operating income margin, which climbed from 6.8% to 14.6%.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary driver of this financial improvement, particularly through the strong performance of games for smart devices and PC browsers, such as Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe and DRAGON QUEST WALK. Additionally, the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) sub-segment benefited from the release of expansion packs for FINAL FANTASY XIV and DRAGON QUEST X, which spurred a sharp increase in subscriber numbers. Conversely, the High-Definition (HD) games category experienced a decline in net sales due to a lack of major title launches during the period.
Beyond digital gaming, the company saw positive momentum in its Publication and Merchandising segments. The Publication division recorded sharp growth in both digital and printed media, while the Merchandising segment benefited from the release of new products featuring key intellectual properties. The Amusement segment experienced a slight decline in net sales due to a lack of new arcade machine releases, though operating income remained stable. These results, prepared in accordance with Japanese accounting standards, highlight a period of successful diversification and digital-led growth across the group’s core business segments.
