Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, reflecting a period of revenue growth tempered by declining operating margins. The company achieved net sales of 271.0 billion yen, an increase of 20.7 billion yen over the previous fiscal year. However, operating income fell to 24.5 billion yen, down from 38.1 billion yen in the prior year, resulting in an operating income margin contraction from 15.2% to 9.1%. This performance was driven by the release of major titles such as Kingdom Hearts III, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Just Cause 4, which increased sales but incurred higher development and release costs.
The Digital Entertainment segment remains the primary revenue driver, contributing 204.5 billion yen to total sales. Within this segment, the company noted a significant shift toward digital distribution, with digital sales growing at an annual average of approximately 40% over the past five years. Conversely, the Games for Smart Devices and PC Browser sub-segment experienced a year-on-year decline due to the underperformance of new titles launched during the period. The Amusement segment saw increased sales from new machine roll-outs, though operating income was impacted by higher depreciation expenses. The Publication segment emerged as a growth area, bolstered by strong digital comic sales and the performance of the Manga Up! application.
Looking ahead, the company has set a forecast of 270.0 billion yen in net sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020. Strategic priorities include an organizational restructuring implemented in April 2019 to improve operational efficiency and a continued focus on expanding recurring income through digital sales and long-tail earnings models. The company maintains a medium-term target of 300–400 billion yen in net sales and 40–50 billion yen in operating income, supported by ongoing investments in new intellectual property and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and extended reality.
