Square Enix Holdings
The Square Enix Holdings financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2017, demonstrate a period of significant profit growth driven primarily by the company’s Digital Entertainment segment. Despite a slight year-over-year decline in consolidated net sales to 188.0 billion yen, operating income surged to 33.7 billion yen, representing a 12.3 billion yen increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. This performance reflects an improved operating income margin of 18.0%, up from 11.3% in the prior year.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary catalyst for this financial success. Within this segment, high-definition (HD) games saw increased profitability due to strong digital sales, even as the volume of new blockbuster releases decreased. The Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) sub-segment also contributed robustly, bolstered by expansion packs for major titles such as Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X, which drove both disk sales and subscriber growth. Additionally, the smart device and PC browser games sub-segment maintained strong performance through stable revenue from existing titles and royalty income.
Other business segments showed varied results. The Publication segment experienced growth in both sales and operating income, supported by digital comic book expansion and media-mix strategies. The Merchandising segment also saw gains, driven by character goods tied to established intellectual properties and anniversary events. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced a decline in both sales and operating income, attributed to a reduction in the number of new amusement machine releases, despite steady facility operations. The company maintains a cautious outlook, noting that financial projections are subject to market volatility, currency fluctuations, and the competitive nature of the global gaming industry.
