Mobile Dev Memo
A 2014 study identified franchise-focused, genre-focused, and diversified approaches among mobile gaming companies.
The analysis of mobile gaming portfolio strategies evaluates how different organizational approaches to game development impact financial performance. By examining 100 mobile gaming companies using proprietary data from the Apple App Store and Google Play, the study categorizes development strategies into three distinct models: franchise-focused, which leverages brand recognition across genres; genre-focused, which specializes in specific game mechanics; and diversified, which maintains a broad array of titles across various genres and intellectual properties.
The primary finding indicates that the genre-focused strategy outperformed both franchise-focused and diversified models during the 2014 fiscal year. This success is largely attributed to the dominance of major titles like Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans, which allowed developers to utilize cross-promotional tactics to drive traffic to new releases within the same genre. These high-performing titles generated sufficient revenue to subsidize less successful projects, thereby bolstering the overall portfolio's profitability.
However, the analysis cautions against using a single-year timeframe to validate the long-term viability of these strategies. Because portfolio theory is designed to mitigate risk and reduce co-variance over extended periods—specifically by protecting against shifts in consumer preferences—a one-year window is insufficient to determine the true resilience of a portfolio. The presence of extreme revenue outliers in 2014 likely skewed results, making it difficult to distinguish between sustainable strategic advantages and the short-term impact of individual hit games. Consequently, while genre-focused portfolios demonstrated superior performance in the short term, the industry's relative youth and the inherent volatility of consumer tastes suggest that long-term strategic efficacy remains an open question.
