The rules foster a more diverse and competitive international ecosystem.
Key Change. Valve's new licensing rules will end tournament organizers' team partnerships from January 1, 2025.
PGL has announced a comprehensive schedule for 11 Counter-Strike 2 tournaments spanning 2025 and 2026. This expansion follows significant regulatory changes implemented by Valve, which prohibit tournament organizers from maintaining partnerships with teams starting January 1, 2025. By removing these conflicts of interest, the new licensing rules aim to dismantle the long-standing monopoly held by a few major organizers, fostering a more diverse and competitive international ecosystem.
The tournament schedule includes five events in 2025 and six in 2026, distributed throughout the calendar year to maintain a consistent competitive cadence. The 2025 events are slated for February, March–April, May, and two in the September–November window. The 2026 schedule follows a similar pattern, with competitions occurring in February–March, March–April, May, August, and two in the September–November period. These events are categorized as Tier 1, non-major competitions.
This shift represents a strategic milestone for PGL, which identifies itself as the only independent international tournament organizer in the current landscape. While the move is intended to increase variety and inclusivity within the professional scene, it also signals a broader increase in the volume of events for professional teams. Industry observers have noted that this expanded calendar, combined with the activities of other major organizers like BLAST, ESL FACEIT Group, and Starladder, will significantly increase travel requirements for professional players, potentially impacting the overall competitive workload.
