Square Enix Holdings reported a decline in financial performance for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. Net sales reached ¥45.4 billion, representing a 20.2% decrease year-over-year, while operating income fell 66.9% to ¥4.2 billion. These results were largely attributed to a lack of new game releases during the period and the absence of one-off licensing fees that bolstered the previous year’s figures. Management noted that while earnings declined across all business segments, the results ultimately exceeded internal expectations due to resilient digital sales.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company's primary revenue driver, faced significant headwinds. The HD Games sub-segment recorded an operating loss, driven by heavy advertising expenditures for upcoming titles and a lack of new product launches. Meanwhile, the Games for Smart Devices and PC Browsers sub-segment struggled as several titles launched in the previous fiscal year underperformed. In response, the company plans to shift its mobile strategy toward leveraging established intellectual property from console games and manga, while clarifying internal development roles to improve efficiency.
Other segments showed mixed results. The Amusement segment saw increased net sales despite the lack of new machine launches, though operating income declined. The Publication segment benefited from strong digital growth, which offset sluggish printed comic book sales. Looking forward, the company remains focused on driving long-term value through digital downloads and the release of major titles such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts III. Management emphasized that ongoing digital promotion remains a critical strategy for sustaining revenue from catalog titles and mitigating the impact of competitive market conditions.
