Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. The company achieved net sales of ¥57.0 billion, representing an 11.3% year-over-year increase, while operating income rose by 43.9% to ¥12.8 billion. Recurring income and net income attributable to parent company shareholders also saw significant gains of 106.1% and 56.8%, respectively. These results were driven primarily by robust performance in the Digital Entertainment segment, which benefited from high-margin digital downloads, successful expansion packs for long-running MMO titles, and licensing revenue from mobile partnerships.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company's primary revenue driver, recorded ¥44.1 billion in net sales. Within this segment, the MMO sub-segment reached record-high paying subscriber levels following the release of the "STORMBLOOD" expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. The HD Games sub-segment saw increased profitability despite a decline in new packaged goods sales, as catalog titles like NieR:Automata maintained strong momentum through digital channels. Additionally, the Games for Smart Devices/PC Browsers sub-segment improved its operating margins by leveraging licensing fees and the full amortization of development costs for existing titles.
Secondary segments also contributed to the positive quarterly performance. The Publication segment reported growth through steady comic book sales, while the Merchandising segment benefited from character goods associated with the 30th anniversary of the Final Fantasy franchise. Although the Amusement segment experienced a year-over-year decline due to a lack of new arcade machine launches, the company maintained its full-year earnings forecast. Management continues to prioritize a multi-platform strategy and the enhancement of digital sales infrastructure to sustain growth throughout the remainder of the fiscal year.
