Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. Net sales reached ¥132.0 billion, representing a 24.2% year-over-year increase, while operating income surged by 132.3% to ¥25.8 billion. Net income attributable to parent company shareholders also saw significant growth, rising 218.7% to ¥17.5 billion. These results were primarily driven by the successful launch of major HD titles, robust performance in the MMO segment, and steady contributions from existing smart device games and publication assets.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary engine for this performance. The HD Games sub-segment benefited from the release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and strong catalog sales, including NieR:Automata. The MMO sub-segment achieved record-high paying subscriber counts following the release of the Stormblood expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. While the Amusement segment experienced a slight decline due to a reduced number of new machine launches, the Publication and Merchandising segments both reported growth, supported by solid comic book sales and character merchandise tied to major franchise anniversaries.
Management is prioritizing a transition toward digital distribution to improve profit margins and extend product life cycles, noting that digital downloads could eventually account for 70% to 80% of the HD games market. Future strategic efforts focus on securing development resources to meet medium-term management goals, leveraging the Nintendo Switch platform for new and rebooted IP, and integrating AI into development processes. Despite current successes, leadership maintains a cautious outlook on full-year guidance, citing intense competition in Western markets and the need to evaluate the performance of upcoming holiday-season releases before adjusting forecasts.
