New Zealand Game Developers Association
The New Zealand game development sector has achieved a significant economic milestone, surpassing $1 billion in annual revenue for the year ending March 2026. This accomplishment arrives two years ahead of the industry’s original 2028 projection. The sector’s rapid expansion, which is currently outpacing the global average by more than 20 times, highlights the growing importance of weightless digital exports to the national economy.
This growth is attributed to a combination of sustained studio innovation and targeted government support. Specifically, the Game Development Sector Rebate (GDSR) and funding from the Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE) have been instrumental in accelerating development. Preliminary analysis indicates that these initiatives provide an approximate eight-to-one return on investment for the government through generated income and employer taxes.
The industry’s trajectory follows a period of robust performance, including a 29 percent increase in the workforce and $758.9 million in revenue recorded in the previous year. With the sector now contributing significantly to the national GDP—potentially exceeding the primary sector’s contribution—the focus has shifted toward securing long-term sustainability. Future efforts are directed at strengthening education and vocational pathways to support continued job creation and economic resilience. Comprehensive, finalized statistics for the 2026 period are scheduled for release in an upcoming annual industry report in September.
