Create free accounthello and welcome to Pocket Gamer novices monetize ER this is our YouTube playlist where we play fifa mobile games and kind of talk about the monetization and the design and other things as well but many looking at the kind of the interaction between monetization and can I can play an audience so the game looking at here today is marvel excuse me a marvel avengers academy so as we can kind of see from the from the kind of street right here so kind of like a kind of school sim type thing with the the avengers characters but when they're teenagers if that makes sense so pretty me this is aimed at a teenage audience don't you see some characters here there's locky where's Tony Stark there's the Iron Man firing his repulsors we've got black widow somewhere she hacking something up here I think it's stock town so that she's hacking the system
and wasp is somewhere lost her she was doing a pie was the pie place de mogi summer okay so tell the game work so black widows just done something there she's hacked the system sees that that was a mission another way so just take that mission took my mission we'd count down there so I've done that cool and I'll get a reward so this thing's flying in tap their quirky little things he's going to say so get some gold which is the software of the hard currencies of both hard crap so you can both but you can buy both the credits and you can buy the shot okay so this is the kind of main bit of the chemist of the game place mission structures this is the mission board this is where we kind of see I mean this is very kind of see kind of different things we can do basically it's a very grindy grindy grindy timey game so there's kind of quests and
missions I suppose so so yeah so wasp is got 21 minutes of her mission to do a party whatever that means then what she's doing and I get 35 credits that in the mish instructor here these are just basic repetitive thing so there's lucky what do you want to do study I ask guardian sorcery so you can study some arcane lore so we do basically just have it a list of actions so a lot of these only level Rank 1 so lovely to can't do but you can just see there's a time attached to them it's kind of a bit meaningless he's can go and study for five minutes and then I'm going to get some some gold so so I man still got another four minutes hopefully you can see here I can speed that up by spending one I'm sure there's innocence is very traditional and kind of the old fashioned monetization really where you have characters you get them to do missions are basically wrong time there's nothing interesting going on in the game play there is really no gameplay there's the whole thing is a metagame it's all about kind of yours no
to cometh not really again not the game's need skill but the it's all about the end resolvers there's no there's nothing interesting in what they're doing let you see animations fun but I mean second time you see it's not particular esting and similar thing is so black widow where she so she can search for clues hack the system sunny psychology pretend to have fun at the club sorting there's a Guinness social please because you can run off and do something so and then more like doing stuff is not really very much else for me to do so we can see here there's this these other areas that are not unlocked yet they can look interesting I mean that's doubly give metagame stuff so go here and see there's going to be some romance stuff dating not not yet in an update there's this outfits customization stuff level 6 7 11 for you can see in the top left hand corner so the shop is the other kind of main thing just stuff I can buy I mean I don't we know why would this is deco stuff is just customization a little bit points
really a tree there we go the tree there's building two buildings have a bit more softly the vent dying bed dines outfits if i buy that I can just get kind of gameplay attach that to degree billions a year pins lab you know I've got anything I'm not going to take an hour to build and I've got our 416 number 416 credits which I don't have the 416 so I would need to buy 720 so that's like four pound fifteen in english money to a brother six seven bucks which is not in substantial and then when you get onto the main bits which is see if I upgrades dark test dark tower to get to stage two I mean the starting to add up but if we go so go to the character that's the main thing so you can unlock characters so there's vision if i buy now that's almost a thousand shards a thousand shards I'm gonna have to spend the 1664 over twenty bucks to do that and the one that anyone cares about which is kind of what happens nation works is awfully hope so it's almost
1,500 1,500 these is going to be well as 41 pounds 72 if I you have to bind double that almost or buy more than double that perfect at 60 bucks to give you the ability to buy Hulk I don't think it says here Hulk can unlock a level 35 but I'm a level four is could take me a long time to get to that stage to unlock it so I do find the motivation of this game is a little bit odd considering i imagine the audience is probably a bit younger than some of the other Marvel games and then I kind of describe this I kind of used the term aggressive monetization and that's not a bad thing isn't think it's bad to be aggressive monetize or bad to be kind of passively monetizing but you need to need to design those in I think tiny Kevin make this game they've done a lot of free-to-play games most recently the family guy game that's pretty good and I enjoyed that again that was kind of a wonder that it was that aggressively monetized but fairly fairly so but the UK okay did very well on top loading charts and and that's I guess with all
these free to play games and how you address the monetization it's it's designing the monetization level for the audience you're going to get and then seeing the result in the top grossing charts so be very interested to see how this game doesn't operating charts probably cuz i think i'm not sure the match between the audience and the monetization is is is well-matched really i just kind of think you know there's not any for any game whether there's talking about a gameplay focus game or a metagame focused game I mean the all both can be fun but this there is no game playing this game which is fine and the metagame is a bit abstract as well really there's not really quite enough going on so you know the moment I'm not okay so you just finished a tone just finished that so I get something I get some reward so I finish the mission so tick okay so there's my little things going to drop but that's it and then basically bottles well okay talk to those magic fingers to work tinker with
tech tech so then basically just go off and do the next thing it takes of an hour no and that's kind of fun as well because I could just go right he's doing something for now I'm going to go away and come back in an hour but I just not sure really this is quite gonna be enough and I think really annoys me I don't know why this is is this this little this won't go away you won't fault you won't fold in it folds out disappoint but why doesn't it come wasn't it collapsed down is that really odd maybe it's just me another really odd thing actually we hope we have mentioned before toys in the quest there's this buy one get one free so actually is a quest x box of credits and gets yards free so that's done nice you getting some shots free a lot but you're spending money so it's saying by some credits and that's kind of interesting and I say this come back to they can regressive under sedation which again i point out it's not bad i don't think it's a bad thing it's kind of a good thing you wanna make money but it's interesting that leave I guess tiny co
thinks this would appeal to a look to the audience to have it in there anyway but of the proof of the pudding what will be will be in the top row C charts and will be checking out and seeing how the game kind of kind of if it does find knowledge its make maybe you know tiny code know more about making games than I do certainly anyway so that's the that's a marvel avengers academy never get to subscribe to our youtube channel so we do a lot this analysis of free-to-play mobile games we do something called first time user experience where we play game for the first time just to get the tutorial there's something monetize ER is a bit later on we've kind of been played a game bit more a bit more of a measured view on it and also the in-app inspector about other things about the industry so don't forget to subscribe you won't miss a thing hope to see you soon
Marvel Avengers Academy, a school-themed simulation game featuring teenage versions of Marvel superheroes, utilizes a highly aggressive monetization model that raises questions regarding its suitability for its target demographic. The game functions primarily as a metagame, focusing on repetitive, time-gated tasks and mission management rather than skill-based gameplay. Players assign characters to perform various activities—such as studying or hacking systems—which require waiting for timers to expire to earn rewards, with the option to accelerate these processes through in-app purchases.
The monetization structure relies on two currencies: gold and shards. These are used to unlock characters, purchase cosmetic items, and upgrade buildings. The costs associated with these actions are significant; for instance, unlocking certain high-profile characters can require expenditures exceeding sixty dollars. While the developer, TinyCo, has a history of successful free-to-play titles, the implementation here is characterized by a lack of depth in both the core gameplay and the metagame, which may struggle to maintain long-term player engagement.
The analysis suggests a potential misalignment between the game’s aggressive financial demands and the expectations of its younger audience. While the developer’s strategy aims to maximize revenue through traditional mobile gaming mechanics, the lack of substantial interactive content makes the high price points for character unlocks and upgrades appear disproportionate. Ultimately, the success of this monetization strategy remains dependent on its performance in top-grossing charts, serving as a case study for how developers balance aggressive revenue generation with audience demographics in the mobile gaming sector.
