Modern Combat 5 represents a significant technical and mechanical evolution for Gameloft’s mobile military shooter franchise. Showcased at E3 2013, the title demonstrates a clear focus on graphical fidelity, utilizing a heavily modified version of the engine used in previous installments. Improvements are particularly evident in environmental rendering, specifically regarding advanced water effects, dynamic lighting, and highly detailed skyboxes. Character models also receive a substantial upgrade, featuring increased polygon counts and more expressive facial detail compared to the series' predecessors.
Gameplay mechanics introduce several tactical layers designed to deepen the squad-based experience. A primary addition is the deployment of a radar drone, which allows players to identify and track enemy positions through obstacles. The combat loop incorporates a revival system, enabling teammates to assist downed players who remain capable of firing their weapons while incapacitated. Furthermore, the game integrates the Havoc physics engine to enhance environmental interactions and destruction, exemplified by a mission set in a destructible, historically inspired Venetian setting.
The development process for this iteration began prior to the release of the fourth entry, with a dedicated team focusing on refining both the core shooting mechanics and the user experience. Customization remains a central pillar, with the demo highlighting the ability to modify weaponry—such as swapping sights and suppressors—directly during active gameplay. While the demo features adjusted difficulty settings to accommodate journalists, the final product aims to balance these advanced tactical tools through refined mechanics, marking a concerted effort to push the boundaries of mobile first-person shooter performance.
