The South Korean game developer Shift Up has experienced a significant surge in market valuation, increasing eightfold over a five-year period. This growth is largely attributed to the commercial success of the mobile title Goddess of Victory: NIKKE. The valuation shift was highlighted by a recent divestment from WeMade Entertainment, which sold its 4.2% stake in the studio for $53.9 million in 2023, having originally acquired the shares for $7.4 million in 2018.
The transaction involved the sale of 2 million shares to Aceville, a Singaporean holding company and subsidiary of Tencent. This acquisition increased Tencent’s total stake in Shift Up to over 24%. Beyond its role as an investor, Tencent serves as a strategic partner, with its division Level Infinite managing the global distribution of Goddess of Victory: NIKKE.
Financial data underscores the title's impact on the market, as it currently ranks among the top three highest-grossing mobile games for Tencent, trailing only Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile. Since its launch in November 2022, the game has generated over $400 million in revenue, with current monthly earnings outside of China estimated at $32 million. For WeMade Entertainment, the divestment served as a strategic financial maneuver to mitigate a $64.5 million loss incurred during the first half of 2023.
