The indie extraction shooter significantly outperformed other titles on the platform.
The March 2025 analysis of game unit sales provides a comparative overview of performance across Steam and PlayStation platforms, highlighting the significant impact of co-op mechanics, aggressive discounting, and seasonal fiscal strategies. The data reveals a distinct divergence in consumer behavior between the two platforms, with Steam favoring viral indie co-op titles and PlayStation maintaining a strong reliance on premium AAA releases and established sports franchises.
On Steam, the market was dominated by co-op experiences, led by the indie extraction shooter R.E.P.O., which achieved 8.7 million units sold. Other notable performers included the early access title Schedule I and the co-op adventure Split Fiction. A recurring theme on the platform was the influence of deep discounting, which propelled older titles like Anno 1800 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint into the top 10, effectively displacing newer releases such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Conversely, the PlayStation top 10 was defined by high-profile premium launches and sports simulations. Assassin’s Creed Shadows led in units sold on the console, while Monster Hunter Wilds demonstrated strong momentum, reaching a cumulative 2.6 million units on PlayStation by the end of March.
Sports titles accounted for over 36% of the PlayStation top 10, with EA’s FC 25 and MLB: The Show 25 serving as primary drivers. The analysis suggests that publishers, particularly Ubisoft and EA, utilized aggressive end-of-quarter and end-of-fiscal-year price reductions to bolster revenue figures. While these fire sales successfully moved units for legacy titles, they also underscored the ongoing challenge of sustaining momentum for new premium launches in a crowded market. The findings highlight the continued relevance of evergreen titles like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V, which remain consistent performers regardless of platform or release timing.
