Live Streaming’s Effect on Chess.com Popularity

Live streaming has become a primary driver for the record-breaking growth of Chess.com, which reached an all-time high of 10 million active members in January 2023. The platform’s surge in popularity is closely linked to the professionalization of chess influencers and the emergence of high-profile, creator-led streaming events. By transitioning from traditional play to content creation, chess influencers have successfully introduced the game to broader, non-traditional audiences.

Key influencers such as GMHikaru, BotezLive, and GothamChess have established significant followings on Twitch, each averaging over 4,000 concurrent viewers. In 2022 alone, these creators generated more than 20 million hours of watched content, with GMHikaru’s channel accounting for 12.7 million of those hours. This sustained engagement is bolstered by large-scale streaming events that leverage the reach of non-chess celebrities. For instance, the Pogchamps 3 tournament, which featured prominent streamers like Mr. Beast and xQc, propelled the chess category on Twitch to a peak of 376,000 concurrent viewers.

The impact of these events extends beyond standard broadcasts, as demonstrated by Ludwig’s Chessboxing tournament in 2022. This event achieved a peak viewership of 317,000, setting a new record for the creator and highlighting the effectiveness of integrating chess into broader entertainment formats. These data points underscore a clear correlation between the strategic use of live streaming platforms and the rapid expansion of the digital chess ecosystem. By tapping into the influencer economy, chess has effectively transitioned into a major category within the global live streaming landscape.
