Mörk Borg, a rules-light, visually maximalist tabletop role-playing game derived from the old-school renaissance (OSR), serves as the focus of this study of fan remix culture. The analysis argues that the game's fandom operates as an active zine culture, one that deliberately rejects canonization and embraces "crap game" values in order to subvert the reactionary and exclusionary legacy of OSR, including the racist, misogynist, and conservative roots that became the subject of public controversy in 2021. The work situates the game's aesthetic within punk zine traditions and frames its community as a counterweight to those inherited norms.
The central thesis holds that the game's clashing visual, typographic, and material design functions as an accessible, remixable toolkit. Its freely available and deliberately illegible typography, public-domain and mashup artwork, and default CMYK-friendly palette of pinks, yellows, and blacks lower the barriers for novice designers. Evidence cited includes the reported release of over 1,000 third-party publications between a September 2020 license and January 2022, and a survey of a 2021 itch.io jam in which 77% of its 43 submitting designers had first released tabletop content through Mörk Borg fan work. The author points to community artifacts such as the Anti-Paladin Toolkit and the Mörk Borg Design Primer as concrete illustrations of this dynamic.
The scope is centered on the digital fan economy surrounding the game, particularly community-run jams and archives hosted on platforms like itch.io, during the period from 2020 to 2022. The conclusion is that the game's permissive third-party license, inclusive community standards, and catalyzing fan labor together make it a model for low-barrier, remixable tabletop design. The closing reference apparatus grounds these claims in scholarship on role-playing games, representation in tabletop design, and queer modding labor.
