LEC Announces Sporting Financial Regulations for 2024 LoL Esports Season

The League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) has introduced new Sporting Financial Regulations (SFR) effective for the 2024 season. The primary objective of these regulations is to foster long-term financial sustainability within the EMEA League of Legends ecosystem by encouraging teams to operate more stable business models and providing greater job security for players. The league explicitly distinguishes these measures from traditional player salary caps, as they do not impose a hard limit on individual compensation.

Under the new framework, teams must maintain the combined salaries of their five highest-paid players within a defined range. This range is bounded by an upper spending threshold, calculated using factors such as current player salaries, league revenue pools, and team financial data, and a lower spending floor set at 50% of that threshold. Teams that exceed the upper threshold are required to pay an SFR fee to the league. Specifically, teams must pay 50% of any amount exceeding the threshold, increasing to 100% for any spending that surpasses 150% of the threshold.

Revenue generated from these fees is split equally between the league, which uses the funds to support the tier-two EMEA ecosystem, and compliant teams that adhered to the spending guidelines. The policy includes specific exceptions for contracts signed before or during the 2023 LEC Season Finals to mitigate immediate impacts on existing rosters. This regulatory shift aligns the LEC with similar financial oversight measures recently adopted in other major regions, such as the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK), as part of a broader industry trend toward fiscal discipline.
