KLab
Distilling the key insights…
KLab’s financial results for the fourth quarter of 2015 reflect a period of contraction and strategic restructuring. The company reported consolidated revenue of 4,342 million yen, representing a 29.2% decrease from the third quarter and falling 13.1% below initial guidance. Operating profit for the quarter was -73 million yen, missing the break-even target. For the full fiscal year, revenue declined 2.2% to 20,913 million yen, though operating profit saw a marginal increase of 1.6% to 2,198 million yen, largely due to disciplined cost-management efforts.
The quarterly downturn was driven by declining revenue from key titles, including the Japanese version of Love Live! School Idol Festival and Bleach: Brave Souls. Additionally, the company recorded a 262 million yen impairment loss on Glee Forever! after the title failed to meet lifetime value expectations, leading to a decision to halt large-scale promotions for the game. While the English version of Love Live! reached record monthly revenue, new releases such as Age of Empires: World Domination and Puzzle Wonderland did not contribute significantly to the quarter’s financial performance.
To address these challenges, KLab is shifting its business model toward a three-pillar strategy: in-house game development, outsourced publishing, and non-game business ventures. The company plans to mitigate development risks by adopting a revenue-sharing model with third-party partners and utilizing a shared software development kit. Furthermore, KLab is implementing immediate cost-reduction measures, including workforce optimization, the closure of its San Francisco studio, and a strategic pivot toward event-based and licensing revenue through its KLab Entertainment subsidiary. These efforts aim to stabilize the company’s financial standing and improve profitability in the 2016 fiscal year.
