Ibai & Gerard Pique’s Kings League Peaks at 1.7M Viewers During Regular Season

The Kings League, a soccer-based competition founded by streamer Ibai Llanos and professional athlete Gerard Piqué, has demonstrated significant success in the live-streaming sector. The league’s winter regular season concluded in March 2023, serving as a primary case study for the growing intersection of traditional sports and digital broadcast platforms. By leveraging Twitch and YouTube, the league successfully engaged a massive global audience, highlighting the increasing viability of non-gaming content within the live-streaming ecosystem.

Performance metrics for the regular season were robust, with the league generating over 30 million hours watched and maintaining an average of nearly 400,000 concurrent viewers per week. The season reached a peak of 1.7 million concurrent viewers during a Week 8 match between Pio FC and Porcinos FC. This specific event was driven by the high-profile debut of legendary Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho, which resulted in 5.3 million hours watched for that single matchday alone. These figures underscore the impact of celebrity integration and high-stakes event programming on viewer retention and acquisition.

The broader context of these findings reflects a wider trend in digital media, where the sports category on platforms like Twitch has experienced substantial growth. Hours watched for sports content increased by 46% in 2023 compared to the previous year and by 192% since 2021. As sports content continues to occupy a larger share of top-tier live-streaming moments, the Kings League serves as a prominent example of how traditional athletic competition can be successfully adapted for digital-native audiences, effectively bridging the gap between legacy sports entertainment and modern streaming culture.
